Welcome to Year 5
Sphinx and Griffin Class
Summer Term Prospectus
English – This term we will further develop our narrative writing skills, creating a story based on an ice planet and retelling our own version of a Greek myth. We will focus on: using a five paragraph structure; developing characterisation; including advanced punctuation and using techniques to link ideas within and across paragraphs. We will also be writing a balanced argument, information text and instructions linked to our science and RE topics. We will continue to develop our debating skills including formulating arguments, thinking of rebuttals and using persuasive language. Our debating motions this term are: ‘This house believes space travel should be banned’ and ‘This house believes all living things should be protected.’ We will be reading Farther by Graeme Baker Smith and War Horse by Michael Morpurgo as our class books.
Maths – This term we will be using the four operations to solve multi-step word problems and secure our understanding of decimal numbers. We will also be learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes which will involve measuring and calculating missing angles, as well as translating and reflecting 2D shapes. In addition, we will practise converting between measures including, weight, length, capacity and time. Within each of these topics we will focus on problem solving.
Science – Our first science topic for this term is ‘To Boldly Go’ in which we will learn about the earth, Sun and moon: their roles, functions and characteristics and other aspects of our solar system. We will also find out about space exploration and travel of the past, present and future. In the second half of term our topic will be ‘Music Makers’, in which we will learn and investigate how sounds are made and can be heard.
Humanities – Our topic is Buddhism, during which we will learn about Siddhartha Gautama and the stories of the Buddha. We will also explore the idea of a middle way for people to live their lives following the teachings of the Buddha so that they can fulfill their potential.
PE – We will be learning a range of team games, including hockey, rounders, football and volleyball. We will also be trying out various athletic activities and in preparation for sports day in the second half of the term.
ICT – ICT will be taught across the curriculum, including internet research, word processing and coding
Art – We will continue to explore different media to create some artwork linked to our ‘Space’ topic and look at art within Buddhism, such as Mandalas.
PSHCE – Using a range of activities and resources, we will be focussing on being happy and calm at school. We aim to maintain mindfulness through breathing exercises to assist the children with dealing with pressures, stresses and challenges of daily life.
This year we will be developing the Enabling Enterprise skills throughout our curriculum in both lessons and assemblies. The skills we will be focusing on this term are Leading and Problem Solving.
