Reading encourages a love of stories, which develops vocabulary, an understanding of the world around us, a vibrant imagination, an understanding of grammar and increases general knowledge. It is fundamental for enabling children to access the all aspects of the curriculum.
Read with your child every day, encouraging them to comment on what is happening in the story.
o To develop a love of stories and an interest in non-fiction, it is important to regularly read picture books to your child. Engage your child by asking questions and talking about what is happening in the pictures.
o Please support your child to learn the words and phonic sounds that are sent home each week in the book bag.
o Once the home reading scheme is introduced, the children would greatly benefit from being supported by a parent to read their PACT book every day.
Read with your child daily. Your child will take home books 3 times a week, so please support your child to read these books at home.
It is also important for children to experience books at a higher level in order to continue to develop their love of stories, so continue reading regularly to your child.

Please remember to read with your child every day, this could include:

reading bedtime stories etc. to your child;

talking to them about the books they have read independently;

listening to your child read; and

taking it in turns between your child reading and you reading parts of the book.
Remember that newspapers (i.e. This Week Junior/ First News), recipes and graphic novels are all reading too! Please have a look on the year group webpage to see recommended books for each term throughout the year. These have been carefully linked to the learning in class and books that are appropriate for this age range.
Children have been given reading journals where they can write down the books that they have read at home. Once they have read 20 books there is a bronze certificate, after 40 books a silver certificate and once they have read an enormous 80 books over a year there is a gold certificate. It has been know for children to even achieve a platinum certificate when they have read 100 books or more.
